May 4th?

"May the 'force' be with you!" or "May the 4th be with you!"- which blessing would you prefer? " Apart from the actions, visual effects and music, the "Star Wars" stories do not appeal to me. May 4th, as a special day in history, has been culturally relevant to me though.

Having watched the musical film "My Fair Lady", Audrey Hepburn became one of my teenage idols in the 1960s. When I visited New York in 2007 and passed by the premises where she once lived, I was jubilant. However, that the star was born on this date 89 years ago does not bother me.

During my formative years, the May 4th Movement that began in old China 99 years ago today somehow struck a chord in me. Those seeking sovereign dignity, political rights and cultural changes became part of the historic event. I believe their legacy in shaping modern China lives on.

I am no scientist, but I like high-tech consumables particularly those with eye-appeal appearances. In 1989, I would re-mortgage one of my premises to pay off the purchase price of a sports car. I chose to take possession of it on May 4th, and it, together with fond memories, are still with me!
